Last week Steve and I went to the marketing day put on by the company I work for and it was super informative, however not too cheery. Farming, as one speaker put it, is coming out of the golden age. And in plain and simple terms, it will not be as profitable as it has been. Will this year make or break a lot of farming operations, in my personal opinion - yes I think it will. We as producers have been spoiled in this 'golden age' and in these years to come we will start to see more of the risk side associated with farming; the side of farming that generations before us managed to persevere through. I hope the smallest of farms, and the most clueless of marketers can come away from this 'ugly' year+ of farming unscathed; but if history even slightly repeats itself there will be some people who have no choice but to find work off of the farm. And. That. Sucks. Because these are the people who are helping feed the world, and the world is not getting any smaller!!
On a brighter note, we are not leaving the farm any time soon so you get to hear all about life here in our 4th generation farm house!!
The farm is bustling with little babies. These little creatures amaze me at how fast they grow; nursing and then walking within minutes - they are pretty astounding!! Right now we are up to 44 babies and counting.
I hope you have a lovely weekend and I will see you all next week!
Is there anything you would like to see in From The Farm Friday? Any burning questions about life here on the farm? Let me know in the comments below
