The farm was more active this week because it was time to chop corn.

Before the corn is ready to be harvested there is a certain amount of it that will get chopped and not combined - the purpose: cattle feed {aka silage}.

Up until a few years ago the chopping was done primarily by the guys on our farm but we now hire it out. This saves so much time, what used to take multiple days now only takes hours out of one day.

The chopping machine takes the entire corn crop {green parts and all} and chops it up and spits it out, different from the combine that will just keep the kernels come harvest time. The trucks dump the corn {silage} onto a pile that happens to be in our yard. Once dumped in the yard it is packed down with tractors to help form the pile and lock in the freshness! The heifers in the yard are already so excited, they know their fresh feed is being prepared!

Steve & his dad packing the pile

This huge pile {56 acres of corn / 1200 tons} will now be incorporated into the diet of our cattle when they all come home for the Winter.

Year Three as a Mrs.

Well it is no surprise Year 3 has been a tough one for us! We were very much a family of three when the year started and losing our pup was hard on us as individuals and as a couple.

The trials of year 3 show me that life is truly better when we are together!!

     to my husband of three years,

we kept each other afloat this year when in march our hearts were shattered. God knew what he was doing putting us through these trials and we are stronger for it. i love the way you love me and how we grow with each passing year. i couldn't imagine anyone else by my side for this life journey and pray year four has everything we long for and more!

     love your wife

I read something in Savor the other day that really resonated with me - it was about being intentional with the memories you create alone together. Sounds like a 'well duh' moment but sometimes we get so busy in life we forget to just sit with each other without an agenda or schedule.

Steve and I made sure to make time for each other over Labor Day weekend. We went on a short canoeing/camping anniversary trip and had a great time just taking in the beauty and not getting consumed with technology. It was the perfect end to three years - bring on year four!!

What do farmers keep busy with when they are in between harvesting crops?

If that isn't your questions it is one of mine, especially when I ask my farmer to make plans with me and "he is busy" …
Just FYI for those soon to be farmer wives or ladies who are interested in farmers. "I'm too busy" is a common phrase that you will wish wasn't in the vocabulary. Remember farmers don't work 9-5!!

Main things going on around here in between crops is equipment maintenance & tillage. Since I'm not here during the day I don't know all the details of in between harvest season but I know there are different parts of the combine that need to be tailored to each crop so they are busy with fine tuning. As far as tillage goes the crops for next spring need a good seed bed, so after the wheat is harvested in the fall they will dig up the field exposing fresh dirt so come spring it is ready to plant a new crop into.

Since we aren't only grain farmers Steve is also busy making sure all our cattle are doing well in their pastures.

There is a nice little breather between crops though so if the weather cooperates {and Steve isn't busy} we usually try and hang out by the river and soak up the last warm days of summer while the animals appreciate us grilling and hanging out with them!

Hope you all have a fun and safe Labor Day weekend!!

Welcome Fall 2015

I used to think my favorite season was summer and I have been trying really hard to hold on to it this year but now it is the 1st of September and I CAN NOT WAIT FOR FALL!!!

Our wax melts and fall candles are out of storage and the house smells nothing short of amazing. I see hints of yellow and orange in our leaves outside and the beauty of this upcoming season never ceases to amaze me.

Even if my days outside catching the rays of sun in a bathing suit are over I am reminded how much I adore fall and think it has won over summer for 'Favorite Season' - bring it on Mother Nature {just keep the S word away}!!

A few Fall Highlights I can't wait for include…
:: The Colors
:: NYC vacation with my sister {get to "meet" Casey}
:: 3 year anniversary
:: Sweatshirt & Shorts weather
:: Camping trip
:: Boots - Leggings - Blanket Scarfs {oh my}
:: Football

What are you most looking forward to this fall?
